A history of faith, freedom and commitment to the Gospel.
An anniversary message from the Archbishop Primus
Today, we celebrate with gratitude the 129th anniversary of the Free Protestant Episcopal Church of England, an ecclesiastical tradition whose history is deeply rooted in religious freedom, the heritage of the Protestant Reformation and the preservation of an independent episcopal identity.
Since its foundation on 2 November 1897, this Church has represented a distinctive expression of Protestant Christianity, bringing together the episcopal tradition, freedom of conscience, ecclesiastical autonomy and fidelity to the fundamental principles of the Christian faith.
Throughout its history, it has endured generations, challenges and transformations, keeping alive a heritage that belongs not only to the past but continues to inspire the present and guide the future.
Today, this history extends far beyond the borders of England and finds expression through our Worldwide Communion, comprising member Churches, communities and ministers in different countries and across every continent. We are part of an international ecclesiastical family, united by a shared historical heritage, the Protestant Episcopal tradition and a commitment to bearing witness to the Gospel in diverse cultures and circumstances.
To celebrate 129 years is not merely to remember a historic date. It is to reaffirm a commitment: to preserve our identity, honour our history, strengthen our Worldwide Communion and continue proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ with freedom, dignity, love and responsibility.
May this Church remain faithful to its historical vocation, open to dialogue, committed to inclusion and a witness to a faith that does not imprison consciences but sets them free; that does not exclude but welcomes; that does not divide but seeks to unite.
129 years of history. 129 years of tradition. One Worldwide Communion. A continuing mission!
May God bless the Free Protestant Episcopal Church of England, its Worldwide Communion, its episcopate, clergy, member Churches and all those who, throughout its history, have contributed to preserving and passing on this legacy.
The love of Christ is the bond that unites.
The Most Reverend Ricardo Lorite de Lima
